Today I ran up a hill I struggled to walk up four months ago- and I wasnt too winded to breath after. This is a major milestone for me and has taken four months of gradual slow run training to achieve. For years I experimented with an only yoga approach and while I could perform most Int/Adv poses with relative ease and right effort, my overall fitness declined and my body started to manifest more strain and mild injury. As a woman nearing forty ( only 1 year shy) I knew this wasnt good and so started to try moving in other ways in addition to yoga. I would like to be able to be backbending like Vanda Scaravelli when Im 90, but also be able to run after my grandchildren without wheezing, and be able to carry my own groceries. If this rings true for any of you fellow bendy types out there I recommend you ski, play, hike, lift weights, start jogging or pole dancing or whatever floats your boat as it may be just what you need. Please dont be afraid it will hold you back on those deep poses you covet, I think it may just allow you to do yoga better, for longer.
