Today I read two news articles with much interest in the Kathmandu Post. One article by Sujeev Shakya on Cartels against reform dealing with how cartels in the forms of associations and their exercise in the price fixation has eroded the very foundation of the market based competitive economy. It has become too late to address this anomaly if Nepal is to unleash its economic potential and move from managing poverty to managing prosperity, in the words of Sujeev ji. We need to address this issue urgently. Another is statement by Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai saying coops should be lumped with pvt. sector - a very theoretically sound and practical statement. Coops also work on the same market based principle like the private sector and as such there is no need to treat it separately. Coops are mainly characterized by their decision making style - majority counted by the number of shareholders, and not by the number of shares. And, definitely cooperatives need to play important and critical role in mobilizing small production units. In Nepal, cooperatives will thrive further if there is no political patronage. Needless to say, political support is required by all.
