Today I remembered the good and the bad of our nation. The promise of freedom is lofty, and has to be fought for every day. Somehow we have confused "Security" with "Freedom", and they are not one in the same. Our country has had its share of evils brought on by government - Central and national banks, manifest destiny, using smallpox as a biological weapon against American Indians, forced removal, slavery, concentration camps, segregation, the police state, wounded knee, Kent State, NDAA, Patriot Act, martial law, etc... I guess what I am trying to remember is the amount of courage it took to stand for freedom, and in the end our nation was born out of the pains of fighting against tyranny. Regardless of the evils enacted on us by governments both foreign and domestic, we must remember to stand together and build a free nation that is the envy of the world, and to resist the temptation to simply redirect the tyranny that we seek to free ourselves from.
