Today I thought Id tell you a story. One time I went with Maurice up to Backus…it was summer and Maurice had a farm up there. On the way up, we saw the most incredible norther lights that I have ever seen. We stopped along the highway (it was very late> 1 a.m. ?) to see them…the lights were all around us…like a cathedral dome…I seriously thought it was the end of the world for a second…Anyway, we made it to Backus and the next day, we visited Bob Vork who was driving a tree crusher for the summer. We went out to the woods to see Bob….the tree crusher was of enormous size…the tires were taller than a man…I dont know how Bob got that job…but he could just drive through the woods! Later, we met Bob at a local little restaurant bar. I had my guitar…so Bob and I began singing. We did a little Hank Williams…Everly Brothers…anything that we knew. The patrons of the bar seemed to enjoy us. Bob and I did all the work…we were under age…so we got offered no beer for our efforts. However, I found out later that Maurice was given free beers …I guess they thought he was our Manager…perhaps Maurice mentioned that he managed the BCSB. The whole memory is wonderful to me…it was hard core! On my return trip, I was hitch-hiking with my uncased guitar ( I didnt own one). This was foolish because if it rained, the guitar would have been ruined…but I was a foolish lad. I must have looked interesting though because I got picked up by Bob Berglund. He was a congressman at the time. He was going to St. Paul…so we had a nice 2 hour conversation. A few years later, I was on my mail route listening to the radio. It was a cold snowy day…they were announcing the cabinet members that President Jimmy Carter had chosen. Bob Berglund was chosen as head of agriculture. Here I had gotten a ride with a congressman…who was now in the presidents cabinet! I think of the way things are today…I dont think a congressman would pick up a hitch-hiker….but I kinda think Bob was a special kind of politician. I got this photo by googling Bob…where I learned more about him. Maurices mom knew Bob…and she once told me that Bob inquired about me on a visit home…to have a U.S Cabinet member inquire about me…hey…that was kind of special!
