Today I was called by Georgia SPCA telling me about Shamrock a mama dog and her puppy Clover. Shamrock and her puppies were tied up in a retention pool where all of her puppies but Clover drowned before they could be rescued. Poor girls have been through a ton of trauma. I went to the center to access her. I wanted to see how much and if she would be trusting of humans. Plus I was concerned if we would be able to get her on a leash so a foster would be able to take her out to potty. She was under a desk in the directors office. She was such a trooper and allowed them to bath her and trim her nails. She would allow pets, but was very scared using numerous calming signals. As luck would have it one of the wonderful GA SPCA foster dads was there with his dog. Our hope was that she could go home with them. Bless her heart she was brave and came out of the office into the play area. She was open to walking with Chris and allowing him to pet her and love her up. She did pretty good with Foster Dad Erich and his wonderful dog Lexie. Lexie is a dog that is good at training other dogs. She gave all the right signals to Shamrock. BUT..... Shamrock was making it pretty clear that she wanted to go home with me. She was kissing me, trying to get in my lap, staying glued to me, etc. So Shamrock and Clover are currently sleeping in my bathroom. Scout and Smokey are confused as to why they cant go see her, but she has been through a lot. I want her to have some space to relax and feel safe. Shamrock is curious about the boys, but I dont want her to feel like she has to be protective of Clover. She showed signs of being protective, so no need to push things today. All dogs can see each other and have all accepted that is all that is happening today. I laid down with Shamrock and Clover until they fell asleep. She is so sweet though, because every time I go check on her she wags her tail when she sees me. Amazing how after the trauma she has been though that she is genuinely happy to see me and loves the pets and snuggles.
