Today I was invited by commissioner Elba Garcia to attend a coordinating meeting with major federal, city, and local school district representatives. Dallas County judge clay Jenkins convened this meeting. Here are the outcomes: - 2000 children from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador will be arriving in late June to Dallas - three sites have been tentative identified to house these children ages 4-16, hulcy ms, Lamar ES in gpisd, and a parkland facility on Buckner - contractors will be funded thru FEMA and other federal agencies to provide wraparound services for these children At this time based on my observations, LULAC and other Latino non profits will need to identify volunteers to help, tutor, mentor and coordinate recreational and art activities for these children. We are going to need Spanish speaking volunteers since many of these agencies like the Red Cross and Salvation Army have few bilingual staff or a network of bilingual volunteers. I urge you to begin identifying bilingual volunteers ready to be trained and oriented upon arrival of these children. Call me or email me if you want yo help.
