Today I was thinking about the way we always remember that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Who can not forget with all the special events that happen around our Cities. Think about all the pink ribbons, bumper stickers and just pink things in general. I know some awesome and inspiring Breast Cancer Survivors. I am so thankful that I know them because they improve my quality of life. I commend the work of the organizations that raise money to save lives related to Breast Cancer. Did you know that October is also National Domestic Violence Awareness Month? As I think about the month of October I am reminded that I know far more Domestic Violence Survivor than I know Breast Care Survivors. Now, this could be because those I have known with cancer dont survive as much. Or this could also be because people tend to cover up Domestic Violence more often and live in shame as a result of it. The first time my boyfriend hit me I was 16 years old and he was 18. I was embarrassed so I did not tell anyone. I know people dont usually think about teenage dating and Domestic Abuse but it happens more than we want to admit. I am a living witness that it happens. I am also a living witness that you can end it and survive. My name is Tufara and I am a Domestic Abuse Survivor. Please also consider spending some time learning about the cycle of violence (video below). As you prepare to go to bed I challenge you to take some time and pray for those who are fighting for their lives against Breast Cancer. As you prepare for bed pray for those who are struggling in the cycle of violence. I pray that in my community we have more Survivors in general of both Cancer and Domestic Violence.
