Today I wrote this reponse to cde Kgoshi Maepa FB post. By now Im more convinced that my analysis were not far away from the truth if not the truth altogether . I personally view January 8 statement as a platform for our leaders to outline the organisational programme for the year. It is a revival session for me.Umkhombandlela for the year. It is also a fact that in the 21st century with our organisation being in power, the bourgeoisie within and outside the movement has given January 8 statement a new meaning. It has been viewed by the bourgeoisies and middle strata as platform of business opportunities, networking, flaunting wealth etc. We have two kind of Jan 8 Statements in one. 1. Gala dinners & networking sessions mostly for the bourgeoisie most happenning prior the main event. It is cost an arm & leg to attend these sessions. This is attended mostly by the black middle strata and the bourgeoisie . The credit worthy. This class favours capitalism and that it will do its best to influence the post-apartheid society and the organisation to move into this direction. This class takes part in the organisation and jostle for hegemony and attempt to represent their interests as the interests of all South Africans. 2. The other session that I personally termed it Freebies event is for the peasants and proletariats where the President is addressing the masses. It is for free- most of the participants are bussed in-free t-shirts. But even in this event the class division is evident. The middle strata & bourgeoisie will be in the enclosed air conditioned suites whilst what is normally called Our People which are the foot soldiers of our beloved organisation, the door to door strategies implementers, the cadres on the ground will be in the scorching sun in the stadium and over-flow areas. Then the question remains on how do we reposition Jan 8 statement to its original meaning during the current times without alienating any class? I dont have an answer for that.
