Today In Native American History: On December 19th, 2009, President Barack Obama signed the Native American Apology Resolution in to law. This was an official measure which “apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States.” The preamble acknowledges the various means by which lands were taken by military force, broken treaties, tribal displacement, kidnapping of children to boarding schools and genocide.
