Today Joanie Steinhaus and I walked the East Beach on Galveston Island looking for oil and tar balls but saw none. The beach was closed and we could see workers in the distance. Clearly the public is being kept far away from the bunker oil spill in Galveston, but we have heard that about 200 oiled birds have been found. We connected with two of our sea turtle beach patrolers, Wendy Clayton and Sarah Campbell, who saw no turtles but could not walk the whole beach due to the closure. We are hoping that nesting sea turtles wont be impacted but they are due on the beaches here any day now! We also picked up some monofiiment line.
