Today, June 26th, is the day that the City of Port of Spain celebrates ONE HUNDRED YEARS of being a Municipality - a Local Government body. I am proud to have served on that body for twelve years, starting under the late Mayor Gus Williams, Telly Paul, John Rahael and Murchison Brown. As we celebrate it would be wise for citizens, especially our Burgesses to become more familiar with the rich History of our Capital. It is unfortunate that even after one hundred years that the various governments have still not seen it fit for Local Government in Trinidad to be included in our National Constitution, although the THA has been. This means that Local Government bodies - with the exception of the THA - can be dissolved at any sitting of Parliament by a simple majority. This may yet happen, frightenly so, should a new structure be designed where Parliament may have selected Ministers being responsible for various Ministries of government and the elected members being responsible for their Constituencies, thus replacing Councillors and the Local Government Bodies. There are many events carded in recognition of this milestone and it is my wish that the Corporation and its Council would continue along a path of success in all of its operations and undertakings. Alvin Narine. Former Councillor, Nothern Port of Spain Port of Spain City Council.
