Today, Saturday November 22 at Sevilles Cathedral The Duchess Of Alba was laid to rest. The most titled Royal person in the world, and one of the most interesting personalities to be placed in the pages of history. She was a direct descendant of James II of England, and that was just the beginning of her fascinating background. She was the third woman to hold the tittle in her own right, and her wealth & properties exceed by far those of Queen Elizabeth, whos familys heritage looks like a parade of kitchen maids compared to hers. The only person in the world who is not required to bow in the presence of the Pope, whos private library includes the original maps of Columbus & the first publication of Don Quijote, with a collection of over 50 thousand works of art, including 17 Goyas ( and yes..... one of mine, which she hung in one of her bathrooms above the toilet. Hey... I rather hang in her bathroom wall, than in one of those pretentiously overdecorated living rooms in Palm Beach ). With a mouth like a truck driver, an uncanny sense of humor, and a rebellious streak, she was incredibly human. When I met her years ago I was amazed at her lack of pretension and her warmth, as if the weight of the incredible history of her family was simply a feather. She flirted like a teenager at the age of 73, and danced with all the fire and spice of her beloved Jitanos. Her ashes will be split between Seville and Madrid. Her spirit ?.... that will always be like the spirit of Spain : restless, blinding, morbid, passionate, unforgiving and full of beautiful savagery.
