Today , Sunday the 21st. of December , something happened on a ship I was assigned to this morning , that I have never experienced before ! This morning when I boarded the M/S Stride , a loaded tanker bound for the Ama Anchorage , and as I was walking to the superstructure of the ship , I saw something in the dim light that at first I did not recognize ! Upon closer inspection , it turned out to be a wounded but still alive Louisiana Brown Pelican that evidently and inadvertently flew into some part of the ship and injured him or herself ! I touched it with my foot and to my surprise he responded by looking up at me and showed every sign of life ! At that point , I had to leave my feathery friend and report to the Bridge of the ship and relieve the Crescent River Port pilot that was waiting for my arrival ! During the course of the three hour trip to the Ama Anchorage and as the light of dawn permitted I was able to keep an eye on my new found friend and observed that he apparently was still alive although somewhat disoriented . After the ship was anchored , I asked the Captain if he could have a crew member wrap him up in a blanket and place him in either a bag or a bucket so he and I could make the trip home so he could proper receive medical attention ! The Captain complied and was more than happy to have me remove our Brown Pelican new found friend ! To make a long story short , Pete , the Pelican survived the car trip home with me to my home in Slidell and is now residing in a dog kennel and has access to both fresh water and fresh raw fish that I picked up for him at a local bait shop ! Upon closer inspection of Pete , he evidently sustained a broken wing and I during the course of the trip home I called a number of veterinary places of business , the local Louisiana WIldlife and Fisheries office and the New Orleans Wildlife Refuge , BUT being Sunday morning all were closed and I could only leave voice messages on their respective phones ! For the time being , Pete is resting comfortably in my wire dog kennel and after devouring a good quantity of Red Fish and Poggies , and water he appears to be standing upright and alert ! I was able to immobilize his wing BUT if anyone that reads this and knows of any service that cares and treats injured large birds , I and Pete would certainly appreciate any and all any names and contact numbers ! Thanks for your help with this matter !
