Today, Wednesday, was our last full day in Salt Lake City. After the foul weather debacle up in the mountains yesterday we elected to spend the day downtown enjoying the sights and history. As it happens, the weather was tourist-and-convention-bureau perfect! SLC is, at least in the downtown area, an eclectic mix of the modern and the historic. One wonders how many amazing old structures were mowed down to make way for the modern stuff. The downtown city is immaculately clean and tidy, with the exception of a few derelicts and panhandlers, who are present in every city. The area just across the street from the Latter Day Saints Tabernacle/Temple complex, is a fine shopping complex called City Creek. It’s very tastefully built over and around the creek that once delivered fresh water to the LDS complex and surrounding businesses back in mid to late 1800’s. It’s fed by melting snow in spring and early summer and later by springs from the mountains, and amazingly is teeming with rainbow trout! We spent a few hours in the LDS complex and met a couple of young women, our tour guides, who are serving their mission assignments here. They did an excellent job teaching us the history of the church and describing all of the buildings on the property. The Temple itself is off limits to visitors, but we were able to visit both the Assembly Hall (we non Mormons would call it a church) and the Tabernacle. We were able to attend an organ recital at the Tabernacle. Wow, what an instrument, what acoustics, and what a talented man is the organist! Unfortunately we’ll miss the choir, which performs on Thursday. We did a little exploration of the City Creek Center, enjoyed a couple of slices of Sbarro’s pizza and checked out some stores. Before returning to camp we drove up the hill to the State Capitol for some photo ops and exploration. We found beautiful grounds and a stunning Capitol building! It was great day with cooperative weather and exciting sights. On Thursday morning we pack up and head south to spend time in several national parks for about a week. The southern parks of Utah are said to be unparalleled in beauty and downright awesomeness. Our expectation is that we’ll confirm that!
