Today a Turkish football fan group, Carsi, is on trial for a so-called coup attempt during the Gezi protests. The Carsi group is considered to be the heroes of Gezi protests by many. They were the first to defend the peaceful protesters against the police, but their biggest legacy was when they drove heavy machinery on the riot police to chase them away. Mass protests were Erdogan’s biggest fear at the time - the fact that there were secular masses confronting him for more democracy was showing the world his totalitarian ways. Things have changed since then. Now the biggest danger Erdogan - and Turkey - is facing is an Islamic cult once supported and nurtured by Erdogan himself. While seculars of Turkey have been warning against Gulenists (The islamic cult) since the early 90s, the AKP government supported and benefited from their illegal ways until they turned against Erdogan and his close circle. This fight between two religious muslim groups are slowly showing the Turkish public that those who are best to run any country are not those who define themselves through religion but those who believe in democracy, pluralism, rule of law and freedom of speech. Gezi protests and Carsi was symbolizing just that - the youth of a nation asking for more democracy - not a big daddy figure pushing religious values to people. Here is how Carsi reacts to getting tear gassed. https://youtube/watch?v=PZSXjuM6N5Q
