Today as I was leaving the gym, I decided to run into Publix for a minute. So I pull into the empty space, really close to the main entrance, thank you very much. Score! Well, right beside me is a young woman, early to mid-twenties, unloading the cart into the back of her SUV. I get out and walk around to her. “I can take that back for you,” I offer as she is closing the door to her vehicle. I held out my hand as a gesture for her to give me the cart. At first she simply stared at me in shock. Then her face broke out, no, exploded into this expression of sheer gratitude and joy. She didn’t say a thing. I smiled and took the cart from her, turning to go in the store. I guess it took her a few second to recover. “Thank you so much! And you have a wonderful day.” She called after me in a loud cheerful voice. I turned and gave her a little wave, grinning back at her. “Thanks, and you too,” I said as I resumed my very short walk to the store. Let me tell you; I felt as if she’d done me a favor. And it was such a little thing. We were literally less than a hundred feet from the store. Okay, don’t get me wrong. I ain’t that nice. A couple of days from now, I’ll probably cut her off in traffic. Or maybe she’ll pull in front of me, and I’ll have to salute her. But for now, that one small act of unnecessary kindness gave me a warm fuzzy that lasted much longer than the deed itself.
