Today at 10h30 I accepted and received a petition on behalf of the Executive Mayor and the Chief Whip from a group of about 200 foreign nationals, mostly from the Somali community. Oh!! what a sad plight. The memorundum reads..... The Somali Community in and around Nelson Mandela Metro is constantly under siege from an army of criminals. Their lives in the townships are at stake and on average each day an incident happens on which one is killed or critically injured, an injury which sometimes lead to permanent disability. The Somalis are always under terror; they cannot freely board public transport, walk freely around township; their vehicles are hijacked. Not only are they killed but their bodies are sometimes mutilated or stoned to death. Since 2006 over 900 lives have been lost of which no suspects were put in jail or booked although these incidents were reported to the police by victims and cases were opened. Also in the same period over 6000 shops were looted and burnt to ashes. They are now completely losing trust and faith in the South African system and in particular the Police who were meant to protect them. They are urging the Government to enact measures and reinforce external mechanism that may curb this hazard. In shalaa
