Today at 9:27 AM Club member PBs, first timers, a professional triathlete stops by, perfect weather conditions. Our latest CMC TT had it all... Thanks to senior club member Giles A, the team got to meet professional triathlete Cody Banks on Tuesday night. We were offered an informal 30 minute Q&A and the potential for a ridiculously quick lap on our 10K Alps Road loop. For those of us who have wondered how good the pros are, we were about to find out... After rain swept thru in the early afternoon, the skies cleared and the winds dropped. Cody noted that could be a fast night, due to the low pressure after the rains had passed. Gary C was the first rider to leave the starting block at approx 6:50 pm. Gary pushed his Trek Speed Concept to an 18:00 flat time, good for a 33.3 kph average. CMC ladies 2014 TT points leader Janice B was next to leave the gate and blew away her PB by 1:37 dipping into the 19s at 19:36 / 30.6 kph. Great job Janice! Making his 2014 TT debut and working hard on his cross bike, Tom set his course benchmark at 21:20 / 28.1 kph. It was good to see you out there Tom... Darren P rolled off next and stopped the clock in 17:53, which converts to 33.6 kph. Murray C, riding an Argon 18 road bike in ITU mode, continues to show improvement and clocked in at 17:26 / 34.4 kph. Ian T tied his PB with a 16:19 / 36.8 kph pass, which reflects his hard work this summer, both on the road and while finishing up his school career. (Congratulations Ian!). Giles A, astride a stunning new Specialized TT bike dropped his PB into the 15s with a strong 15:57 / 37.6 kph. Giles ironman training appears to have gone well this summer. Running late, Mark T jumped out of his car and killed his all time best with a 37.6 kph loop. His time of 16:06 reflects a 40 second PB. Brad H rounded out the age group wave with a 15:36 / 38.5 kph. On to the main event... In the midst of a strong pro debut season, Cody B rolled up to the line on a surprisingly pedestrian looking Cervelo P2. However, to those with an eye for detail, this P2 has been tweaked with Tri rig aero brakes, a Renn rear disk, Zipp 808 front and a very slippery aerobar / front end set up. The bike fits him like a glove and allows him a very low and aerodynamic position, allowing him to maintain his power yet still be comfortable enough to hold over his preferred 70.3 event distance. With our all time course record of 15:00 flat in his sights, Cody set off east on Alps road. Catching his one minute man at the turn, Cody drove on, with CMC timekeeper Sarah H stopping the clock in a shocking 13:53. For years, the holy grail of the Alps course has been to drop into the 14s. Cody didnt bother. He just put the record completely out of the reach of mortal riders with his 43.2 kph bomb. Awesome. Post ride, Cody generously spent 30 minutes answering a wide range of questions including training tips, bike fit suggestions and nutrition. It was an interesting peek into the life of a professional triathlete. The CMC would like to offer a huge thanks to Cody and Giles for this opportunity. It was a lot of fun and a learning experience for all of us. Good luck in your career Cody. You gained a lot more fans Tuesday night! codybeals.blogspot.ca/
