Today being the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War, 28th July 1914 , it was also the 21st birthday of my Great Uncle George Barnes. Born this day in 1893, the son of George & Ann (nee Ireland) of Acregate Lane, Preston. He had worked as a cotton weaver at Horrockes Mill in Preston from the age of 13. Joined the army in 1912 aged 18. 5ft 5inch tall and weighing exactly 8 stone. Pte 41944 - assigned to 20th Hussars Cavalry . 17. Aug 1914 - Deployed to the Western front. 26 Aug 1914 - shell wound to back . Transferred to hospital 28th Aug 1914. Rejoined force 26. Jan 1915. 25th Feb 1916 - Transferred to Machine Gun Corps. (Cavalry) 10th April 1917 - Contusion to the leg – Achicourt , Northern France ( on the Trek ). 17.July 1917 - Promoted to Lance Corporal. 25th March 1918 - KILLED IN ACTION He and his war horse were both blown up in France ( he was 24). His name is on Roll of Honour on the wall of the Harris Museum Preston. So I thought I would share the 2 precious photos I have of him as a 19yr old boy in his uniform of the Hussars Cavalry.
