Today closed up what proved to be a thrilling NEISA Singlehanded Qualifiers. The competition was so close and it was a very intense regatta. Tom Gallagher and I attended the event, but Tom was unable to sail due to a stomach virus, but he is feeling better now. The first day started out with a light land breeze and we were able to knock out one race before it died. A short turnaround had us back on the water to do 6 more races. The sea breeze was light and the races were tactical and very physical. I rounded out the day in fifth and just 2 points from qualifying for nationals. We sailed out the next day to a building sea breeze, delayed by less than an hour. Races went by and no one emerged to have clear command of the final two qualifying spot. The final race was anyones game as five sailors were still in close contention for the final two qualifying spots. Even around the leeward mark, I was qualifying for nationals! I ended up 6th at the event but took a way a lot of valuable experience. This was only my second college regatta, and I am still trying to adjust my sailing I the college sailing format. The short course places an emphasis on close boat starting, something I need improve a lot. Also closer tactics are a new game because the fleet never really opens up. I am looking forward to a great year to learn and improve my sailing. The Dartmouth team is a great program to be a part of, and I am thrilled to sailing for the Big Green over the next four years!
