Today has been a long hard day, working hard & its been productive. As my exhibition gets closer the paintings im working on get smaller. All this week im painting smaller ones. This painting of the Towy on a very icy snowy morning isnt one of them but it will be in my show. When i paint small i tend to paint slightly differently & its fun to not have any definite ideas about what the subject is going to be. Often ill just splash some paint on & see what it suggests to me, let it grow & allow my imagination & memory of the natural world to dictate what appears before me. Its instinctive painting & i get a great deal of satisfaction from it. It only works well for subjects that i have a good knowledge of. Also its very freeing, not referring to any reference material & its a test of what i know & what i dont. Believe me, it doesnt always work. Ive painted some absolute stinkers doing this but sometimes they can turn out to be little gems. I am so tired & famished so im off to find food. Everyone that requested an invitation to the Aberglasney show should be receiving them in the next couple of days.
