Today has been a really special day. It is not often I have a day off on the beautiful Caribbean island of San Andres!!! Here is the view from my practice room, an odd piano ... White grand made by Binder & Sons ... go figure and in and the bottom octave has quite a few notes that are more or less some variant of g or g# !!! The Mosquitos are too friendly and as I practice Beethoven this odd little blue sort of lady bug seems to be thrilled with my Beethoven edition. But I dont mind as at times I stop because their color is absolutely amazing! Practicing Beethoven piano concerto No. 3 always brings back very fond Memories . . Two in particular.: Dana Burnett who I care for more than she remembers and listening to her practice and going to hear her rehearse with the North Carolina Symphony for a New Years concert many years ago . . That is a special memory to me. Second: after listening to a rehearsal of Alicia de Larrocha in the Palau in Barcelona.. After the rehearsal everyone left and she stayed practicing, and I heard before my eyes, that you can improve that which already seems perfect. We were the only ones left in the hall and as we were walking out, around the corner from the Palau was a cafe restaurant and they were advertising fresh Percebes a seafood that Alicia, loved, was my first Percebes which I dont know what is the name in English and the first time I had lunch with Alicia. The Poulenc oboe sonata I am playing in four weeks, I have not played in 24 years!!! I have a very found memory of Disa English, and the fantastic recital we gave 24 years ago in Barcelona Town Hall. I dont think anybody but other musicians know how hard musicians work, but few non musicians know the joy we feel making music and how blessed we are to see the world and share our music with the world. Tomorrow and Monday, a holiday here in Colombia, I will teach very talented student with a thirst and hunger for knowledge. They constantly inspire me and remind me how lucky I have been to have had such wonderful teachers
