Today in 1981 Ozzy released the album Diary of a Madman Birmingham, England Heavy Metal Status:Active Years active: 1979-1980 (as Blizzard of Ozz), 1980-present John Michael Ozzy Osbourne (born 3 December 1948) is an English singer-songwriter. Throughout an extraordinary career, which has so far spanned four decades, Osbourne has made major contributions to the worlds of music and popular culture. Osbourne rose to prominence as co-founder and lead singer for pioneering English heavy metal band Black Sabbath (1970-79, 1997 to 2008) he was, in effect, one of the chief architects of the genre, creating the powerful new sound and provocative performance style that would forever expand the definition of rock music. As a result he is known as the Godfather of Heavy Metal, and, because of some of his material, the Prince of Darkness, and eventually achieved a multi-platinum solo career which revolutionized the heavy metal genre. In the early 2000s, his career as a celebrity hit a new zenith when he became a star in his own reality show, The Osbournes alongside wife/manager Sharon and two of their three children, Kelly and Jack. In August 2008, Osbourne stated in USA Today that he intends to retire from his music career after two more albums. Osbourne was born in Aston, Birmingham, England. Osbourne is also known for biting the head off of a bat a fan threw on stage during a concert. He was sent to the hospital for a rabies shot and claimed he thought the bat was fake. In 1980, Osbourne debuted as a solo artist to widespread popular acclaim. Over the next two decades, his career continued to gain momentum with a continuous string of multi-platinum albums, and he has brought his notorious live show to sold-out arenas in virtually every corner of the world. As a solo artist, Osbourne has sold more than 50 million records worldwide, bringing his cumulative sales to more than 90 million albums. Blockbusters such as Black Sabbaths seminal Paranoid and Ozzys solo albums Blizzard of Ozz and No More Tears are 4x platinum and still sell thousands of copies each week. As the founder and star attraction of his annual Ozzfest festival tour, now in its 10th year, Ozzy continues to win over legions of new fans while at the same time building the hard rock audience by introducing standing-room-only crowds to emerging artists in the genre. The number of multi-platinum bands (which include Incubus, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, Godsmack, Slipknot and Disturbed) that got their start or broke through due to their visibility on Ozzfest is staggering. Ozzfest, which was launched in 1996, is the longest running and most successful music festival of its kind and since its inception has sold over five million tickets for a total of more than $100 million dollars in revenue. The tour spawned the successful Battle For Ozzfest, Ozzy and Sharons weekly MTV series, which pits hungry young bands against one another for a shot at performing on OZZfests worldwide tour. Ozzy Osbourne could be seen weekly on the Emmy Award-winning series The Osbournes (now complete). The show is so popular in part because wife Sharon and children Kelly and Jack provide Ozzy with a nuclear family life that one would not normally associate with a star who is sometimes referred to as the The Prince Of Darkness. On November 17 2000 Ozzy also had an appearance in a dark comedy movie Little Nicky. Little Nicky (Adam Sandler) is the good son of the Devil and lives in Hell. Ozzy is cast as a powerful angel of God that saves the earth from evil. The influence of Ozzy Osbourne could be felt just as strongly, if not more so, in 2005 than it was in the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. In thirty-five years in the music business Ozzys popularity with die-hard music lovers has never waned. In fact, it only seems to have become greater. From his days as a member of the legendary rock band, Black Sabbath and throughout his tremendously successful solo career (and now, television popularity) Ozzy has transcended all boundaries and categories and is truly among the elite few who can lay claim to being called a true rock icon. It was released on 3 November 1981, and re-issued on CD on 22 August 1995. An altered version appeared in 2002 with the original bass and drum parts removed and re-recorded. In 2011, a Deluxe 30th Anniversary Edition was released with all original parts restored. To date, the album has sold over 3.2 million copies worldwide Diary of a Madman is the final album recorded by guitarist Randy Rhoads, who perished in an airplane crash in early 1982. It also represents drummer Lee Kerslakes final appearance with Osbourne. Although bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Tommy Aldridge are credited in the liner notes and pictured on the inner sleeve, it was bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Kerslake who performed all bass and drum parts on the original release. Aldridge has stated of the album, I think its pretty obvious that its not my drumming on that album. I have never taken credit for that recording and have always given Lee Kerslake, whenever asked or interviewed, the credit he rightly deserves Daisley provided significant contributions to the albums songwriting, having written some of the music and most of the lyrics. Drummer Kerslake claims to have also had a substantial hand in the writing of the album, even performing lead vocals on some of the original demo recordings. Flying High Again was one of my ideas, Over the Mountain was another. The basic tracks were just Bobs words, my vocals—though some of the words I wrote—and Randys playing. It was unreal. And then we got Don Airey to come in and do the keyboards, he stated in 2009. Kerslake says he used a piano in the studio to write many of the songs with Rhoads. Daisley and Kerslake were not given credit for their performance or songwriting contributions, a situation which resulted in a later lawsuit. During the albums recording, Kerslake says the band members were given no money to live on, prompting them to approach management. Shortly after, both Kerslake and Daisley were fired. Everything was working fine. It was only when Sharon came in that we had a problem. When she started managing—taking over—she wasnt the manager until Diary of a Madman. Before that was her brother, David. He didnt really want to handle it. He had too much to do for Don in the office. So she came in and it started to get edgy. But we never suspected a thing until we went away on holiday. Next minute, theyre rehearsing with Tommy Aldridge and Rudy Sarzo, and going to America. Although Rhoads classically inspired lead guitar work on the album has been widely praised, most of the guitar work was unfinished and not intended to be released. Basic demo solos were recorded with the intention of overdubbing the final guitar parts later. Due to studio time constraints, the guitar tracks were left as is. According to a 2005 interview with Daisley, although Don Airey is credited as keyboardist on the album, it was in fact a musician named Johnny Cook (who had worked with Daisley in Mungo Jerry in the 1970s) who actually recorded the keyboard parts, as Airey was on tour as a member of Rainbow at the time and was thus unavailable 2002 re-issue controversy The 2002 Diary of a Madman reissue was derided by fans due to the removal of Daisley and Kerslakes original bass and drum tracks. The re-issue featured re-recorded bass and drum tracks contributed by Osbournes then-bassist and drummer Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin. The move was suspected of being retaliatory in nature, as Daisley and Kerslake had successfully sued Osbourne and his wife/manager Sharon in court, winning songwriting credits and royalties for their contributions to Diary of a Madman. Sharon later stated that Ozzy and not herself was responsible for the decision to re-record the parts, stating because of Daisley and Kerslakes abusive and unjust behavior, Ozzy wanted to remove them from these recordings. We turned a negative into a positive by adding a fresh sound to the original albums. However, Osbourne contradicted his wifes claim in his 2009 autobiography, stating that the decision to re-record the original bass and drum parts was strictly Sharons decision, and that I didnt have anything to do with that decision. He said his wife just snapped and had it done without his knowledge. He also stated that a sticker was put on the covers telling everyone about it, though in fact the sticker was not initially placed on the re-issue and was only placed on the covers at a later date due to fan outcry over the altered recordings. Deluxe 30th Anniversary Edition In May 2011, Sony Legacy released its Deluxe 30th Anniversary Editions of Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz with the original bass and drum tracks restored. These releases also featured bonus tracks and previously unreleased live material featuring guitarist Rhoads – Diary of a Madman features a second CD entitled Ozzy Live, featuring an entire previously-unreleased concert performance from the Blizzard of Ozz 1981 US tour. A box set was also released which included the remastered editions of both albums on CD as well as vinyl, and a DVD documentary entitled Thirty Years After The Blizzard. youtube/watch?v=oolB6BK4BRU
