Today in History . . . 1939. Albert Einstein sends a letter to President Roosevelt urging him to begin construction of a nuclear weapon. Years later, after becoming an anti-nuclear activist, Einstein would claim it was merely a fan letter to FDR that suffered from poor translation from German to English.
