Today in History: First Rocket Launched from Cape Canaveral On July 24, 1950 — 64 years ago today — the first rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral — the place from which all U.S. Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle manned space flights later originated. The rocket first launched from Cape Canaveral was a German V-2 rocket coupled to a U.S.-developed scientific research “WAC” rocket.
