Today in History: September 6: The lathe was patented by Thomas Blanchard (1819); the Southern Pacific rail ine was completed (1876); the 1st prize fight was broadcast on radio. Jack Dempsey knocked out Billy Miske in the 3rd round (1920); 16 year old pitcher Carl Scheib became the youngest player to appear in an American League game (1958); the 1st Barbie doll was sold by Mattel (1959); Willie Stargell of the Pirates had his number, #8, retired. Only 3 other Pirates have been honored – Roberto Clemente (#21), Honus Wagner (#33), and Pie Traynor (#20), Country Music legend Ernest Tubb died at the age of 70 (1984); Princess Diana’s funeral took place (1997); and the largest gathering of world leaders occurred as the U.N. Millennium Summit began in New York City (2000).
