Today in KinKs history June 5, 1967 -- A London judge hands down the first decision in the case Denmark Productions vs Boscobel Productions, legally terminating the two firms co-management of the Kinks. Declaring the case frustrated, the decision nevertheless requires Denmark (ex-manager Larry Pages company) to repay Boscobel (Robert Waces management team) commissions that Page had withheld from the Kinks income for July, August, and the first half of September 1965. This period spans the disastrous conclusion to the Kinks first US tour, on which Larry Page abandoned the naive young band; a rocky European tour; the UK release of See My Friends; and Ray Davies signing of a new publishing contract with Freddy Beinstocks Belinda Music, rather than Pages favored publisher, Kassner Music. This case has cast its shadow over the Kinks business dealings for two full years; the trial itself stretched over nine days and cost 10,000 pounds. Though Denmark promptly appeals, the case will finally be decided against Denmark Productions in June 1968. It will enter legal textbooks as a landmark case in British contract law. Ray Davies concurrent legal dispute with Kassner Music, which has been tying up his publishing royalties, will not be resolved until November 1970 thanks to Doug Hinman from his book All Day and all of the Night for this info.
