Today in Opera History: Erich Wolfgang Korngolds opera Die tote Stadt (The Dead City) premiered in Munich, 1920. Among my favorite of all operas, Stadt was composed by Korngold with its lush 88-piece orchestration when he was all of twenty-four years old. This tale of a mans very unhealthy obsession with the memory of his deceased wife is set to some of the most exquisite music ever written for the stage. Here are soprano Angela Denoke (as the naïve Marietta) and tenor Torston Kerl (as the deranged Paul) singing Glück, das mir verblieb from the first act in a 2001 production in Strasbourg:
