Today in Savannah history July 21, 1861 lawyer, orator, and Captain of the Oglethorpe Light Infantry, Francis Bartow, died at the battle of Manassas. He was born here in this city September 6, 1816. He married the daughter of U. S. Senator John Macpherson Berrien in 1838. He lived on the corner of Harris and Barnard Street at the time just before the Civil War. The Oglethorpe Light Infantry were among those who took Fort Pulaski for the Confederate Army under the orders of Governor Joe Brown in 1861. He later went against the orders of Governor Joe Brown to Manassas with the Oglethorpe Light Infantry. He was the first brigade commander from Georgia killed in action during the Civil War. He has a monument at Manassas and one here in Savannah that was moved from its original location in Chippewa Square to Forsyth Park. He was brought back to savannah, given a heroes funeral and buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
