Kennedy becomes the youngest man to be elected President of the U.S. The youngest person to assume office was Theodore Roosevelt (age 42), who became president following William McKinleys assassination. JFK narrowly beat Republican Vice President Richard Nixon in a hard-fought and bitter campaign. He was also the first Catholic to become President.
