Today is December 31, 2014 and we are about to celebrate New Years Eve in Miami where the temperature is hovering around 78.8 degrees. Its nice here. Christmas has come and gone and most of us are lamenting an overabundance of good food, good times and good intentions. Meanwhile the Storseth household in Williston is marking the end of a year filled with uncertainty and hope, then more uncertainty and more hope. The snow has piled up and melted, one day the temperature dips to 15 degrees below zero and today it has climbed up to 26 degrees above with a 20 percent chance of snow after 2am. Its mostly cloudy, with west winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. That means wind chill. It is just two days over five months since Craigs accident on July 27 and many things have changed...mostly Barbs world as she has navigated alone wondering and preparing for what is next to come. Its hard to carry another especially when that other one is your husband, your life partner, the father of your boys, the one you promised to love and cherish through sickness and health..but who mentioned paraplegia?? How do you spell paraplegia, what exactly does that mean, when will he walk again, drive again, run his dogs again, shovel the snow outside the front porch again , dance with me, hunt with me, ride the four wheeler with me..were those the things we didnt mention in our vows taken almost thirty years ago? We are way too young for this..and while Craig spent time away in the hospital and then in Miami, we all found out something about the character of Barbara Storseth. You would want Barb on your team if something went wrong. She comes through, she doesnt stop, she finishes the job even when the mission is not clearly defined. She doesnt leave you. She had just drove up to the corner store to get ice on that hot July afternoon..a quick trip and like most wives, she admonished Craig to wait for her before he got on the ladder. But like most husbands, he started without her. She heard the commotion in the back yard when she drove up to the front of the house and saw the police cars outside...then she heard Craigs voice..a sound she pushes to the back of her mind. The next thing she knew she was picking up his glasses, his cell phone, his wallet and she was on her way to Minot, following the helicopter..not knowing how badly Craig was hurt. The mind is an interesting phenomenon; she tried to process the information from the voices on her cell phone as the paramedics kept her informed from the skies as they neared Minot. What do they mean, he cant feel his legs??? Later on when she was alone in the parking lot outside the hospital in the dark, she cried out to God in a voice that only he can understand...Why me, why him, why us, why now??? No answer, still no answer, we dont need an answer, would an answer change this, is understanding necessary, does it fix this, make it better??? Five months later and the answer is dont give up, build a ramp so Craig can get into the house, widen the doors, tear down walls, cover the carpet, install new fixtures, manage the finances, pay the bills, fill the prescriptions, visit the doctors, fly to Denver and back twice, work full time at the school, bake bread, make dinner, clean the house, shovel the snow, feed the dogs and then when Craig returns home on December 21 the responsibilities really begin. Everyone is overwhelmed, his mother cooks Christmas dinner and brings it over, his pastor comes by to visit, friends drop over, neighbors come to help and the activity itself is tiring. Then there is the physical care of someone in a wheel chair, the actual carrying out of those vows about sickness and health, the emotional roller coaster...but she is strong and she has a endless source of strength. She has an example of a woman written about ages ago in the book of Proverbs..a woman we all call the Proverbs 31 wife. Let me share with you a few verses from that chapter and you will feel like you have met Barb Storseth. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. There is not much left to say but that Craig will be well cared for and we have hope. Many of you have contributed generously to our campaign. We are just hours away from the end of the year...though many of you have given, give again if you find it in your heart. Barb Storseth is a good woman and a good wife. The needs are many and together we can help her keep her home and her family together.
