PDT HEADLINE: Liberia: Nigerian Nurses Arrive Soon Transcript: Latest report reaching The NewDawn from the Federal Republic of Nigeria says the first batch of 250 Nigerian medics are leaving Lagos for Liberia and Sierra Leone today, Wednesday, December 3, 2014 under the auspices of the AUC Support to Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA). The coming of the Nigerian medics is in fulfillment of a commitment to the two countries. According to reports, Dangote Foundation has provided $3 million towards AU-Private Sector Fund that will support this effort. It was launched in Addis Ababa on November 8, 2014. Through this effort we have fulfilled Mr. Aliko Dangotes pledge to President Johnson Sirleaf and President Ernest Bai Koroma, a Lagos based source of the Foundation said. Details of how many of the medics will be deployed to Liberia will follow subsequently. At the same time the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, recently announced plans to send observers to Liberia to monitor the pending special senatorial elections. Liberias Foreign Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, told reporters that ECOWAS has given in approbation to the presidents request, and the details will be worked out through diplomatic channels. Mr. Ngafuan made the disclosure during a press stakeout here on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2014 alongside ECOWAS President Kadre Desire Ouedraogo and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and head of UN office for West Africa. ECOWAS President Ouedraogo notwithstanding said his institution was prepared to respond and assist Liberia in organizing a successful election for the sake of democracy and stability in our region. We send observer teams for presidential elections; but for the other type of elections, we only go there when there is a need for us to go and observe or where we receive a request from the country, said the ECOWAS president. However, he also warned that authorities here should take the necessary measures during the elections to avoid the spread of the epidemic.
