Today is December the 25th.Christmas for most Christians. For some it is the 7th of January. It is supposed to be a day of happiness, merriment and joy.Especially children love the day and when it draws to a close, wait for the next years. Grownups are different. Most people (me think) reminisce about the joyous and boisterous Christmas of which they have been part of in the past, in their childhood and youth, with nostalgia. We also see on display a wide range of behavior, from gentle to bordering on the vulgar and the nasty on the day. Most spend the day with family and friends and indulge in food, drink and other harmless fun and nurse a hangover at the end of the day.But a small minority get into trouble with the Law and some others end up in the hospital. But Christmas is/was generally fun and that is how it should be.For me the significance now a days is not religious but as an occasion to be with people you know and enjoy the company of. But Christmas is bleak for many all over the world.I imagine it is not joyous for the Palestinian Christians who are at the receiving end from all sides. And also for the Nigerians and for people in various parts of Africa like South Sudan and Egypt. Not to speak of the Iraqi and Syrian Christians belonging to various Christian churches like the Syrian Orthodox and various Chaldean/Assyrian Churches and the Middle eastern Catholic Churches etc. They are caught up in a vicious civil war and are refugees and rendered homeless. The situation in Pakistan is most disheartening. There minorities are systematically persecuted. So there is no cause for the world or us to cheer really. In India also religious strife and sectarian thinking is on the rise. Even then we celebrate. The religious and the irreligious alike. After all that is life. With a wee bit of spirit thrown in for good measure.... I wish all of you a nice Christmas with lot of joy,fun and above all reminisces thrown in.Let us hope the coming year will only be as bad as this year.I am hoping against hope..
