Today is Flavins Birthday!! I want to commemorate this day with a Flavin story. Flavin used to make the BEST gravy. She would use potato water (water in which she boiled potatoes) to season the gravy. She explained that a little peckerwood girl from Double Springs, AL didnt always have a meat to go in the gravy...so they used potato water. And it...is...the...best...gravy...ever. Several years ago she made breakfast on Sunday morning and had the gravy. But the gravy tasted really weird. And we made the mistake of saying something about it. Do you all remember Linda Blair in The Exorcist? Yeah, thats what Flavin turned into. My sister and I both averted our eyes...Dont look at it!! We have angered it!! We spoke ill of its cooking!!!!! I dont remember what she told us...Im sure I blocked it from my mind. But I have to imagine that it wasnt pleasant. Later on in the day, the old lady came clean. She had gotten the lemonade and the potato water mixed up. She served us lemonade gravy. But I took it really well. She made a mistake. I jumped up, pointed my finger in her face and yelled, In yo face, lady!! You owe us an apology!! We didnt get an apology...but she did slap the pee diddly out of my hand for pointed at her. Happy Birthday Flavin!! And youre not 73 years old...youre 82!!! (And I derive a lot pleasure telling her that, too.)
