Today is International Womens Day. We here in the Western world may wonder why such a day should exist. I would agree, if we were only focusing on women in nations where we have achieved equality. However, I think the purpose of this day is really to draw attention to womens issues around the world. Unfortunately, even in these modern times, a substantial percentage of women throughout the world do not even enjoy basic human rights. Many girls in many countries do not have access to education. Many girls and women are abused, oppressed, treated as though they were nothing; they are not valued, and are considered to be worthless. Many girls and women have no control over their lives simply because they are female. It saddens me to know that many women do not have the opportunities I have. I, being lucky enough to have been born in Canada, am always guaranteed certain rights and freedoms. I wish with everything I have that every girl and woman could have these rights as well. Women have come a long way, but collectively we still have a long way to go.
