Today is Monday, December 22 and I would like to wish all of our followers and berry pickers a very Happy Holiday. The last task for the season is getting the straw put down on the berries and we like to get that done just after Thanksgiving. This year was a bit unusual however with the persistent cold up to Thanksgiving, followed by frequent freeze/thaw cycles for the following weeks. Our days started right at daybreak and lasted until the sun was high enough to start melting the frost in the ground. Once the fields started thawing, the field turned into a muddy mess and we had to quit. Blowing straw took a few more days than usual, but at least they were short days. With the berries put to bed for the winter well start planning for next year. We are considering a program to open up our commercial patch to the high volume, general public pickers on a limited basis. Watch for details next spring as the season is getting underway.
