Today is Mothers Day, so sharing this on this special day! You remember your mother forgetting to buy your dinner for you that day, but forget that she has been buying your dinner for many days. You remember your father not giving you money to buy the latest iPhone, but forget that he has once given you money to buy your current Samsung. You remember your teacher for not staying back to help you individually on a topic you don’t understand, but forget that she has done that more than five times last month. Familiar? Of course. Once we have certain expectations from someone, we tend to only remember the things that are not done by that someone, and not remember the things he or she has done. When is the last time you thank your parents for the allowance they give you weekly? Every week, maybe. But deep within you, are you really thankful? Or every week, you hope they’ll give you more? When is the last time you sincerely thank your teacher for all the things she has done for you? Oh, 1 September 2013. Other than that? You remember her not giving you that extra mark. Have we become so self-centred and complacent that we forget the basics of gratitude? Many self-help books suggest that the moment you wake up every day, be thankful that the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and you have a brand new day ahead. But many of us wake up every day, complain about the journey to work and dread the day. I’ve seen a video about Nick Vujicic, the man without arms and legs. In that video, he was talking to a group of students. He said that he was thankful for each brand new day. Mind you, he wakes up every day without arms and legs. Yet he’s thankful. Do you get the point? For your info, that group of students cried. If you were there, you might, too. There we have it, an armless and legless guy who thanked the world for giving him time to make a difference, and here we have it, an abled guy who blamed the world for not having a car. We’ve remembered the wrong things, my readers. We’ve only remembered what the world has not done for us, but not what the world has to offer us. If you get the point now, maybe you can sit back and think about it the next few minutes. Trust me, upon reflection, you’ll be a happier person. You’ll no longer expect more allowance from your parents, fail and cry—you’ll find ways to get it, and appreciate the fact that, Hey, I’m getting allowance!
