Today is September 15 and the Church offers two Gospel options on this Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, John 19: 25-27 or Luke 2: 33-35, usccb.org/bible/readings/091514.cfm . Johns Gospel takes place at the end of Jesus life on earth and Lukes takes place near the beginning. In Lukes Gospel we see the foretelling of Marys sorrow to come, which is fulfilled in Johns Gospel. It is sometimes easy to overlook Marys suffering and sorrow and focus only on Jesus. And, Our Lady would have it that way, as she always points toward Her Son. But like all children who love their Mother, we should be attentive to her as she is to us. Marys sorrow is not only for Her Son--and it is joyful now that He has come into His Kingdom--but is more for us these days. We stray as people and as nations, and Mary wishes for us all to experience the happiness that comes from being with Her Son.
