Today is a day for reflecting on internet history. The creator and administrator of 4chan has stepped down, whats the big deal I hear you cry. Im not a user and seldom go onto the site these days but I remember the glory days (about 9-10 years ago) and realise that the man who made and ran 4chan, moot, single handedly changed the internet. Many things you are aware of and a lot of general internet culture happened because of 4chan and as one man was running the show can be put down directly to him. Memes, trolling, and raids developed the internets sense of humour. Wikileaks came from obscurity to attention because of 4chan and Anonymous came from 4chan, in fact the name anonymous is how everyone used to address each other on there, still do I assume. Think how much of a difference that has made to the western world! People stepping up to injustice and being brave enough to take on establishments and even their own governments, the whole occupy movement came from anonymous and anon came from 4chan. Indirectly moot has not only warped the entire internet but also been a catalyst for social change across the globe. The jury is out on anonymous/occupy actually doing anything positive for the world and becoming more than a bunch of pseudointellectuals wearing shit masks but originally it was a genuine attempt at changing the systems of the world to better suit those at the bottom. All this stemmed from a 15 year old kid programming in his bedroom because he wanted to share images without worrying about administrators censoring. He was a genuine freedom fighter and although I dont agree with how much of a prick he seems you have to give respect where it is due. Godspeed Chris Poole - youve done something the rest of us only dream of. You changed the world.
