Today is a sad day at The Clay Ferret. Today my vet and I had to - TopicsExpress

Today is a sad day at The Clay Ferret. Today my vet and I had to help OConnor to the bridge. He wasnt sure he was ready, but I knew it was needed. The tumor had been growing very rapidly, and yesterday when I gave him some Wysong canned meat, I discovered that when he would try to chew, his teeth would puncture the tumor, causing some light bleeding. So, I set up an appointment for the first thing today. I also took the canned meat away and gave him watered down baby food, which he could consume without chewing. So, we spent as much time as possible with him yesterday evening, and let him do pretty much whatever he wanted. I also didnt try to give him any of the medicines last night. I saw no reason to do it when he really didnt like taking them anyway. This morning, as soon as I got up, I got him out of his cage, and brought him back so he could explore the bedroom and bathroom while I showered and got ready to take him to the vets office. I noticed he was starting to have some balance problems - something he was not having last night. I suspect the tumor was pushing on the inner ear, and that was the cause. At the vets, he was his usual friendly self, and enjoyed being held and tickled by the office staff while we were waiting for the vet. He was given a sedative, and while he was going under, I held him and talked to him about the Bridge. Con-man always seemed to treat new experiences like a big adventure, and so I told him he was going on a very special adventure. Once he was totally asleep, my vet administered the heart stick, and Connor passed into the next realm. His spirit has been set free from his body now, and he is once again without pain. I believe in celebrating the life when one of my babies passes and not mourning the death. So, I will sahre a story about Connor. OConnors favorite toys were always the Riki Tiki snakes. He had a collecting of them, and guarded them from the other ferrets. However, whenever I gave him a new one for his collection, he would always immediately remove the little bell ball located in the tail of the snake. I think he felt the need to castrate his snakes, for whatever reason. Once the snake had been properly castrated though, it was his. Connor would gather all his snakes and move them to various places when he was out and about. One of his favorite things to do was to take them into my bathroom, and line them up neatly along the rim of the shower stall. I learned no to be surprised when I went in the bathroom and found 5 to 10 of his snakes lined up there. I have to say that Con-man was at least a little OCD. Anyway, here are some pictures of my little man when he was young and healthy.
