Today is also known as Reformation Day because this is the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses (spurgeon.org/~phil/history/95theses.htm) on the church door in Wittenburg, Germany. It is recognized as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, although there had been many people talking about the problems in the Catholic Church prior to this (most of them were martyred). Luther was successful because he had the political backing of a prince in Germany and was therefore protected from the Catholic Church. Many Christians prefer to celebrate Reformation Day rather than Halloween. Heres two perspectives on that: patheos/blogs/geekgoesrogue/2013/10/why-reformation-day-is-dumb/ biblegateway/blog/2012/10/celebrate-reformation-day/ or cbn/spirituallife/onlinediscipleship/halloween/reformation_day.aspx Over the years, my view of the Reformation has evolved. Was it Gods will for the church to splinter into so many denominations? Certainly not. Was it right for Luther and others to rebel against the church? Im not sure. What really happened was that all these people left the Catholic church and then went and created the same thing...a state run church that persecuted and murdered anyone who disagreed with them. Perhaps their theology was better (although I think that most people who push Reformation Day would have serious issues with some of that theology), but their actions werent always great. So, you can celebrate the splintering of the Christian church into 41,000 denominations or you can celebrate the desire to bring the church back to a more correct understanding of Scripture (both of which are true of this day).
