Today is day seven of posting about bands on our new comp (available free at stickshiftrecords.bandcamp). It’s the halfway point, and today we’re highlighting 404ERROR from Connecticut. 404ERROR is a feminist punk/post-punk trio whose songwriting is really great. They prove this by having songs that run the gambit from noisy and aggressive (Tapeworm) to simple and moving guitar and vocals (Wintergirl) without missing a beat. They do some really great work with dynamics and big post hardcore / post punk style breaks that remind me a bit of Fugazi with simple Le Tigre – esque guitar lines thrown on top. The result is just cool. And they are an unabashed, direct, confrontational feminist band. It rules. Their band bio says they like ‘pissing off misogynists,’ and I think that’s a pretty good thing to like. Cheers to that, ladies. If I had to make a comparison I would say that their sound is some kind of awesome mix of Fugazi and Go Betty Go, the latter of which use guitar stops and scratching in similar way to 404ERROR. The way they pull instruments in and out of the song in different parts keeps the music really interesting and gives it a flavor that a lot of punk bands never really accomplish, and their full, tight, and polished sound really fills up the ears without ever getting super aggro. And their selective use of scratchy overdrive on their vocals is a neat decision. It helps to bring a hard, grungier edge to their heavier punk songs, while giving them room to drop the effect when they want less of that. It’s a cool means to augment the feel of each that helps to diversify their sound even further. 404ERROR are a quality act who are a little hard to pin down. A bit of pop punk, a bit of post punk, and even a bit of early punk stuff like Cock Sparrer all creeps its way into their sound. They’ve breadth of musical diversity rarely heard in punk bands, and that keeps them refreshing and fun to listen to. And they do all that while refusing to tolerate misogyny. This is a band that I think could really get huge. Keep an eye on this one! And maybe buy their album on itunes!
