Today is our 35th wedding anniversary. I met Karen freshman year - TopicsExpress

Today is our 35th wedding anniversary. I met Karen freshman year during Allenterm, a January independent study at Alfred which of course was a month-long party. Our first big date was the Lambda Chi St Pats Spring Formal, I was a lowly pledge and needed a date. She was an absolute knockout in a long red dress that I still remember. She still is a real looker. Something clicked that night and we were together for the rest of our college days, inspiring many comments that she was out of my league, how did I ever land her and that I was very lucky to have found her, all true! We got married at Eisenhower Chapel at Penn State. Our Dads stole all the booze and the party continued to the wee hours back at the motel after we left. Wedding night was at the Big Wheel Motor Inn, Mansfield PA, a classy joint on a student stipend. We were both so drunk and tired we just went to sleep. Honeymoon was a week at the cottage where we were chivaried (sp?) by Dad’s fishing buddies. She put me through grad school, alternately freezing and sweating in our 1950’s trailer, bearing with the long hours of my being a grad student. She followed me as I moved around for the job and we’re now Southerners and glad for it! Our biggest achievement together has been our two daughters, both honors UNC graduates, who have grown into mature, smart, funny and personable and beautiful independent young ladies with good jobs, good guys, and medical plans! Now get the rest of your crap out of our house! We celebrated yesterday by cleaning up the attic and crawlspace, paying bills, rotating tires and walking Nick the OCD border collie in the woods, then dinner at 18 Seaboard with a toast to each other. He : beer (some good stuff this time, not Miller Lite), She : The best Pinot Grigio they had. Cheesy grits! Free dessert-see the photo. Karen has kept my dumbass Neanderthal tendencies in check throughout our marriage through sheer Force of Will and voluminous application of the Spoken Word. I figure I can probably retire now, but if I’m around the house more, I’m sure we won’t get to #36. We’re a good team, and we’ve come a long way together. I’m an extremely happy guy. Thanks for the wonderful 35 years, dear, I look forward to many more!
