Today is the 75th birthday of music maker Rahul Dev Burman. It is generally accepted that Bollywood music can be broadly categorized into two parts. Pre-R.D.Burman and post-R.D.Burman. That is to say he completely revolutionized the world of Hindi film music and yet he masterfully straddled both the genres with equal finesse. Being a child born in a musical family with a genius of a father like Sachin Dev Burman (after whom Sachin Tendulkar’s father had named his cricketer son) and a mother who sang as well as wrote lyrics which were set to tune and sung by his father it was natural that Rahul would try and emulate his parents early in life. His earlier attempts at singing saw him getting repeatedly stuck at the 5th note on the octave, ie, Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So). One day the thespian Ashok Kumar (Dadamoni to the whole film world) and he a good singer who was a family friend noticed the plight of the little Rahul getting stuck on the same note, which in Bengali is known as pancham. Ashok Kumar who was also an extraordinary practitioner of homeopathy knew that as little Rahul was still too small his vocal chords were yet to fully develop which over time they would. Jokingly he nicknamed Rahul or R.D. as he is more famously known as Pancham. Those that love R.D. all call him Pancham or Panchamda since then. A portfolio of 331 released films in a span of just 30 years, 16 Filmfare award nominations or 3 awards simply cannot be the yardstick of R.D.’s genius. He composed his first film song at the age of just nine which his father used in the film “Funtoosh”. His immortality lies in his compositions that will haunt us as long as we live. Possibly, God wanted him up there to regale the angels with his music so He took him away from us at the age of just 55 years, an age at which all greats in any field usually peak. It is impossible to pick from the vast repertoire he has left behind. But one must do ones best with those that come to mind immediately before they are crowded out: youtube/watch?v=5VzUxxa0c2I&feature=kp youtube/watch?v=2oRJkAjJ8Pg&feature=kp youtube/watch?v=_G1koIC1qOM
