Discover how the process becomes more manageable when you have the ability to build the language depiction with layers. Layers!! Applying Animations to ASL Construct Registration form can be printed at deafway.net/layers-seminar/ Meet the Presenter: Windell “Wink Smith Jr. Wink holds a National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Master from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). He was formerly the Director of Outreach and Video Communications at Sign Language Resource Services Inc. (SLRS), where he developed the SLRS Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) program, which included designing a completely new and unique VRI module. Wink cofounded and previously served as CEO for a not-for-profit organization, Project NADINE (National Advocates on Deafness to Inform, Network and Enrich). In 2009, he was elected to serve as parliamentarian for the Oklahoma RID chapter and later became the vice president. Wink has written and developed five ASL DVDs with his company Winkshop Inc., a production company that has an expanding library of more than 10 different educational and entertainment products. In addition to co-hosting a weekly ASL radio/visual show with Keith Wann, Wink and Keith plow through various projects that seek to entertain and educate. One such project is the founding of coda365, which seeks to provide a source for CODA education and to bring everyone together within the ASL Community. About the Workshop: Linguistic Studies constantly looks at applications that describe or discover new attributes of ASL. Wink has applied his knowledge of cartoon animation and computer-generated images to further broaden his ASL framework. Animators spend hours studying how objects work, move, look and are expressed in a manner that often brings lifelike attributes to a static medium. In this seminar, participants will engage in useful application and deliberate practice of techniques found in the animation textbook, “Animation, The Whole Story.” One of the greatest hurdles for interpreters is building and animating the depiction they seek to create. Interpreters are often stumped by the introduction of an object and confused by how to begin the expressive process. The process that animators experience is strikingly similar to how ASL images are created and described. Participants will gain insights to techniques that produce visually equivalent interpretations through the lens of an animator, rather than the filter of spoken English. Wink will explain the incorporation of layers to the ASL product. He will simplify the construction process in the same way that animators build an object piece by piece, giving it a 3D appeal. Interpreters will draw from these animation principles to create an image that can be used to organize their thoughts.
