Today is the official day of the Global Frackdown campaign - TopicsExpress

Today is the official day of the Global Frackdown campaign (apologies for late post, was travelling through our beautiful Territory back to Darwin) and we have another couple of letters which you can use to send to your local member, Chief Minister and Minister for Mines & Energy Willem Westra van Holthe. You can also send it to the NT News [email protected] and/or your local newspaper. Another easy way to spread the message is to copy and paste the letter into your facebook status so you can promote discussion and inspire others! . Every little bit helps so please take five minutes out of your day to contribute :) Option # 4 Dear Sir/Madam/Elected Minister, Please protect our most valuable resources and the publics health by prohibiting hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the Northern Territory of Australia. I am particularly concerned about; Depletion and possible contamination of water resources Lack of legislation to ensure the industry is adequately regulated Unknown long term impacts to the environment due to lack of studies on fracking in the Northern Territory Use of chemicals including possibility for chemical spills and residual chemicals left within the fractures Lack of protection for areas of social, cultural and environmental significance in particular National Parks and areas likely to contain Indigenous rock art, sacred sites and irreplaceable archaeological discoveries. Effect on tourism Heavy truck traffic on rural roads Long term environmental damage caused by construction of pipelines and infrastructure Lack of public consultation Credible evidence indicates that shale gas emits more harmful greenhouse gases than coal when the entire cycle from extraction to consumption is considered. At a time when the world needs to quickly move to renewable energy sources, the Northern Territory should not be promoting reliance on shale either at home or overseas. It is alarming that the Northern Territory Government would even consider exporting gas without first carefully examining all the adverse health and environmental impacts of fracking. Stop auctioning off the Northern Territorys public lands to the oil and gas industry for fracking. Our environment and our future is not yours to give away. Yours Respectfully,
