Today is the one month anniversary of Dons surgery. Time often - TopicsExpress

Today is the one month anniversary of Dons surgery. Time often flies even when you arent having fun. I am still totally dazzled by the entire incident. As a friend said: From the time Don had the attack, he was falling from the Lucky Tree and hit every branch on the way down.. Dons weight is still down, and in fact dropping. Despite my best efforts, he is simply not very hungry. He has continued some challenging workouts, walking several miles last Saturday and again on Sunday. Then he slept for twelve hours, from six to six. Don is not a big sleeper, so this was worrisome, combined with the lack of appetite, but when Dr. Tuan Nguyen returned my call, it sounded like it is all very normal. I have often observed a kind of depressive lethargy when people have been through a surgery or other trauma. It makes sense, in that a depressed person would tend to hang around the hearth in the cave and get a chance to heal and survive. Think post-partum depression. The surgery itself causes a loss of appetite with many people. With Don, being a Scientific Methodist, (I say he dances with two left brains..) I believe it has been difficult to understand everything that happened to his body, because he has no actual memory of it. It is as though the scar on his chest could be anything, and the idea that it was precipitated by a heart attack is hearsay. He likes to see and feel and experience things himself in order to give credibility and the memory simply isnt there. But as he incorporates the knowledge, I think he is getting it on an emotional level. Transformational Stuff. All told, he seems better than ever. In just the last couple of days there have been some real cognitive gains, he is taking more care, and maybe the competitive edge has gentled, if only slightly. He has borrowed a trainer and has his bicycle set up by his recliner, sort of a fitting still life for his life now. He is looking forward to the 1st of January, and to getting on his bicycle again. The chest pain (although I think he only took one pain pill since leaving the hospital) has eased almost entirely, but a sneeze or cough does precipitate profanity still. But this IS Don.
