Today marks the end of my week long stay here in Nairobi, Kenya. Seeing how I have spent almost everyday confined to a military base, I havent seen much of Nairobi. The safety and security in the field course went well and brought back many memories of my time with ICRC. From the looks of it I will probably go back to doing humanitarian work in that context. Despite waking up, sleeping and eating the military life, this past week has been quite memorable. The course syllabus reaffirms my firm conviction that we dont do enough to protect our people in the field especially in armed conflict environments. Sometimes there is too much naiveté and complacency. The field exercises were....very real. I have been shot at (blanks of course), had grenades thrown (dummies but with real explosions), been held at gunpoint, abducted, roughly interrogated and told that I was going to be killed. I can now claim to be intimately familiar with Kenyan soil having crawled on my belly, had my head forced into the ground and accidently ate some in the process. Intensive. What I am going to very much miss though is the huge expanse of sky and land that seems to be a character of Africa.
