Today on Sept. 8, 1935 U.S. Senator Huey P. Long of Louisiana, aka The Kingfish, was shot in Baton Rouge and died two days later. Long, a Democrat, was a flamboyant populist whose freewheeling Share Our Wealth program called for heavily taxing the rich and delivering generous payments to the poor. He ruled Louisiana as governor with an iron and corrupt fist before moving onto the U.S. Senate in 1933. Initially a strong backer of President Roosevelt, he split with FDR in 1934 and planned to run against him as a third party candidate in the 1936 Presidential Election Long is one of the great what-ifs in American history, right up there with Robert F. Kennedy in terms of what might have been. Both Long and Kennedy were only 42 when they were assassinated. https://youtube/watch?v=hphgHi6FD8k
