Today on VETSO: (CONTENTIONS OF CHRISTENDOM…cont.,) Yesterday we started looking into the common contentions in Christendom by starting with one of the most prominent one, which is ‘covering of hair’, we want to know what exactly did the word of God say about it, being the supreme standards of the three yardsticks God judges us with, and we were able to bring out two salient points yesterday which are; Point one: the word “But” that began the verse 3 indicates a counter premise according to English, this means Paul had earlier sent some ordinance to the Corinthians which he commended them in verse 2 for doing a good job at following, “But” it seemed the Corinthians didn’t understand it fully, and Point two: “The head of the woman is the man”. We shall continue today by looking at the rest of the points to note and I pray God enlightens our heart to understand in Jesus’ name (Amen). COVERING OF HAIR (THE WORD OF GOD..cont.): 1Cor 11:3-7: “4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven. 6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.” Point three: verse 4 is talking to every Man, saying he dishonors Jesus his head if he covers, But verse 5 is talking specifically to a “wife” not every woman, the Greek word gunē is translated wife in verses that deal with wearing a veil, this was a sign of being married in first- century culture, ESV and other contemporary English translations specifically used the word wife, even looking at it logically since scriptures pointed out to us as seen last week in the verse 3 of this same chapter; the hierarchy of the authority, and we are made to know that a man is the head of a woman, and as we know a man cannot be the head of a woman except they are married. So Man dishonors Jesus his head by “covering” but Wife dishonors ‘husband’ her head by “uncovering”. selah Point four: The uncovering of a wife’s hair is the same as her “head being shaven” but note this; there’s a difference between shaving and cutting short, and this was used differently in verse 6, so according to that verse the solution of an uncovered hair for a wife is either to cut short or shave, but even these are signs of a widow woman, or a woman without a head (husband), look Deut 21:10-12: 11 and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you desire to take her to be your wife, 12 and you bring her home to your house, she shall shave her head and pare her nails. The shaving of hair of a captive woman in those days serves as “reset button” this is because the captor is unsure if the woman had been married or not, so her head is shaven to free her from her bind to her formal husband (if she had) while she cries a month in the new husbands house before she can be his wife, read also Num 5:18, Point Five: 10 that is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. This explains that wife needs to respect the hierarchy, I mean even angels her our ministers so if angels could honor man, then wife most definitely should. Finally: 1Cor 11:13-16 (ESV) “13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the” Point Six: verse 15 says “but if a woman”, as opposed to the “wife” which had been mentioned all through the passage, therefore if I get Paul correctly; an unmarried woman’s hair is given her as a covering while a married woman’s head is the husband and therefore should cover. Point Seven: Judge for yourselves…To be continued.
